Adults-Only Cruising: Is It Right for You?

Adults-Only Cruising at a Glance

An adults-only cruise can sound like the perfect escape: no children’s programs, no crowded splash areas and no family activities competing for space on the schedule.

But “adults-only” does not describe one particular kind of vacation. One ship may feel energetic, playful and social. Another may emphasize quiet surroundings, cultural enrichment and early evenings. Some are designed for couples, some welcome solo travelers and groups of friends, and some attract several generations of adults traveling together.

The absence of children changes the environment, but it does not tell you whether the ship, itinerary or total cost fits you. Here is what I recommend comparing before you book.

Information current as of September 21, 2026. Cruise-line policies and inclusions can change.

What Does Adults-Only Cruising Actually Mean?

An adults-only cruise generally means every passenger must meet the cruise line’s minimum age. That is different from a family-oriented ship that has adults-only pools, sun decks, restaurants or lounges while still welcoming children elsewhere onboard.

The minimum age is not universal. It can vary by cruise line, ship or special sailing, so check the current rule rather than relying on the phrase alone.

Virgin Voyages currently describes its cruises as 18+. That makes the entire onboard experience adults-only, not simply one section of the ship. It also means a family group that includes anyone younger than 18 would need a different cruise option.

Adults-only does not automatically mean:

  • Quiet or formal
  • Luxury or all-inclusive
  • Couples only
  • Focused mainly on nightlife
  • Designed only for younger adults
  • Accessible for every traveler without advance planning

Those details depend on the cruise line and the particular ship.

Who Is Most Likely to Enjoy It?

Adults-only cruising can be a strong fit for:

  • Couples who want time together without family-focused programming
  • Friends celebrating a birthday, reunion or milestone
  • Solo travelers who enjoy adult-centered social activities
  • Parents or grandparents taking a break on their own
  • Adult family groups in which everyone meets the minimum age
  • Travelers who prefer dining, entertainment and public areas designed around adults

It may be less suitable when the group includes children or teenagers below the minimum age, or when someone strongly prefers the features commonly found on large family ships: waterslides, character activities, extensive sports attractions, Broadway-style productions or a traditional main dining room.

The better question is not simply, “Do I want children onboard?” It is, “Does this particular ship provide the atmosphere and activities I want?”

The Atmosphere Can Be Relaxed, Lively or Both

An adults-only ship may have peaceful mornings, quiet outdoor spaces and wellness programming during the day, then become much livelier at night.

Virgin Voyages is an important example. Its official material emphasizes adult-oriented performances, live music, karaoke, pop-up activities, pajama parties and nightlife. It also promotes yoga, spa time, outdoor exercise and places to relax. In other words, travelers can find both activity and downtime, but the overall personality is more playful and unconventional than a traditional, formal cruise.

That appeals to many travelers. Others may prefer familiar production shows, assigned dining, quieter evenings or a more traditional cruise schedule.

Before booking, look beyond promotional phrases and examine a recent daily schedule when one is available. Notice how late major events begin, how much audience participation is involved and whether there are appealing choices for someone who does not want a nightclub atmosphere.

Dining and Inclusions Need a Careful Comparison

Adults-only lines often use dining to distinguish themselves, but the details matter.

Virgin Voyages says its 20+ eateries are included and that it does not use a traditional buffet. Its six signature restaurants are popular, and the line recommends making reservations when the applicable booking window opens. Some premium menu items, dinner shows and ShipEats delivery situations can carry additional charges. Travelers with allergies should also know that Virgin’s kitchens are not allergen-free.

Virgin’s current VoyageFair Choices include dining at 20+ eateries, entertainment, Wi-Fi, unlimited group fitness classes, soda and water across the Base, Essential and Premium fares. However, the fare levels differ in flexibility, dining-reservation timing, Wi-Fi level and other benefits.

One important change deserves attention: for bookings made on or after October 7, 2025, service gratuities appear separately. Virgin currently lists them at $20 per sailor per night when prepaid or $22 per sailor per night when added onboard. Once that service gratuity is handled, Virgin says it does not add separate tips to drinks, dining or spa services.

Alcoholic drinks, spa treatments, shore excursions, retail purchases and selected premium experiences may still cost extra. Compare the realistic total, not only the advertised cruise fare. For a broader cost checklist, see What’s Included in a Cruise Fare? What Costs Extra.

Entertainment and Cabins May Feel Different

Removing children’s programming gives a cruise line more freedom to design shows, parties and activities specifically for adults. That can mean later schedules, more mature humor, immersive performances, nightlife and wellness programming.

Virgin reports that most shows and experiences are included, while certain dinner shows and classes cost extra. Its entertainment can be energetic and interactive. Travelers who prefer conventional theater productions or reserved seats should compare the actual program rather than assuming every cruise line follows the same format.

Cabins also deserve individual attention. A modern design or clever technology does not guarantee the room will suit every traveler. Compare:

  • Actual floor plan and square footage
  • Bed configuration
  • Storage and bathroom layout
  • Balcony size, seating and privacy
  • Noise from nearby public spaces
  • Distance from elevators and dining
  • Cabin controls and ease of use
  • Included suite benefits

The lowest fare may also carry stricter change rules or later dining access. If cabin location matters, make sure the fare lets you select the accommodation you expect. Our guide to choosing the right cruise cabin explains what to check on the deck plan.

Accessibility Still Requires Specific Planning

An adults-only designation says nothing by itself about accessibility.

Virgin Voyages states that accessible cabins are available and recommends booking early. Travelers bringing a scooter must notify the line, reserve an appropriate accessible cabin and store the scooter inside the cabin when it is not being used. The line asks travelers to provide accessibility information as early as possible and, when possible, at least 45 days before sailing.

Virgin also states that it does not provide one-on-one personal assistance. A traveler who cannot independently manage basic personal needs must sail with a capable companion or aide.

Before booking any cruise, confirm the exact features required rather than relying only on an “accessible” label. Ask about doorway widths, bathroom configuration, transfer needs, pool lifts, tender ports, excursion transportation, service animals and medical equipment. Virgin’s current accessibility information is a starting point, but individual needs should be documented and confirmed.

Destinations and Timing Still Matter

A ship may be a great match and still offer the wrong itinerary.

Virgin Voyages currently promotes cruises in the Caribbean and Bahamas, Europe, North America, Alaska, and on transatlantic and repositioning routes. Other adults-only products may focus on different regions or styles of travel.

Compare the ports, usable time ashore, overnight stays, tendering, transfers and number of sea days. A nightlife-focused ship may be enjoyable, but a string of early port mornings can make it hard to enjoy both the ship and the destination.

Our guide to comparing cruise itineraries explains how to evaluate port times, pace, tendering and total vacation logistics.

Adults-Only Versus Family-Oriented Ships

Neither choice is automatically better.

An adults-only ship can offer:

  • Public spaces and programming designed entirely for adults
  • Fewer interruptions from children’s activities
  • Adult-centered dining, wellness, entertainment and nightlife
  • A natural fit for couples, friends and adult celebrations

A family-oriented ship can offer:

  • More options for multigenerational groups
  • Children’s and teen programs when families travel together
  • Large-scale attractions and familiar entertainment styles
  • Adults-only spaces without excluding younger family members from the vacation

Also remember that family-oriented does not necessarily mean overrun with children. The sailing date, itinerary length, destination and school calendar can substantially affect the passenger mix.

What Should You Compare Before Booking?

Use this checklist when considering an adults-only cruise:

  1. What is the exact minimum age for this sailing?
  2. Is the atmosphere quiet, social, active, nightlife-focused or a mixture?
  3. Does the entertainment style appeal to everyone traveling?
  4. Which dining venues and menu items are included?
  5. Does dining require reservations, and when can your fare book them?
  6. What do the fare rules allow you to change or cancel?
  7. Are Wi-Fi, gratuities, drinks, fitness classes and specialty dining included?
  8. Does the cabin layout and location fit your needs?
  9. Are the required accessibility features available and confirmed?
  10. Does the itinerary provide the ports, pace and time ashore you want?
  11. What will the complete vacation cost after airfare, hotels, transfers, excursions and extras?
  12. Would you still enjoy the cruise if you skipped the nightlife?

Adults-only cruising can be a wonderful choice, but the words “adults-only” are only the beginning of the comparison. The best match is the ship and itinerary that fit how you actually want to spend your vacation.
